What is the on-road price?
The on-road price is the total you pay to take a new car home and drive it legally. It is always higher than the ex-showroom price advertised by the manufacturer.
The lines that make it up
- Ex-showroom price. The price of the vehicle before registration and insurance.
- RTO and registration. Road tax, registration and related fees. These depend on state rules, the vehicle price and fuel type, and they can change.
- Insurance. The first-year policy. The premium depends on the insured value, add-ons and insurer.
- Other charges. Items such as handling, FASTag, accessories, extended warranty or fitments, where applicable.
- Discounts. Dealer or manufacturer offers that reduce the total.
How to check a quotation
- Ask for the quotation in writing, with every line itemised.
- Confirm the exact variant, colour and fuel type.
- Check that insurance and accessories are what you agreed to, not bundled by default.
- Ask which lines are fixed (such as taxes) and which are negotiable.
- Compare at least two quotations line by line, not only the final total.
